[Solved] Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
After inserting simple horizontal line, for signature, the cursor will not move to the right end of the line. How do I continue with the text after inserting the line?

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
What happens if you press Enter twice, then move back a line and insert your horizontal line? Are you then able to move to the next line of the file?

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
How did you insert that line?
What happens when you try to move cursor beyond the line (e.g. does the line move)?
I find that the most reliable way to make a signature space is to set up a table, with cell border enabled where you want to have the signature. With this, you can easily have the name or title printed below the line, and have everything moving along nicely if you need to edit content or layout later. You can also have a table row above to ensure that you always have sufficient space to sign in. See attachment.

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
Thank you, gentlemen. I somehow finished the document. I draw a simple horizontal line. Non-printing characters are on and show the line with a paragraph symbol on the left side of the line .
When I place the cursor at the right end of the line nothing happens when I type. Where can I find instructions to upload the file.
Where do I find instruction to create an outline form, save it, and apply it to a document?
Thank you for your help.

How do you draw your line? A line for a signature is often made by using a number of adjacent underscore characters, or sometimes a series of repeated full stops. Usually there is no need (for such a line) to use anything from the Draw toolbar in Writer.

It may be an automatic line, namely a paragraph border. See [Tutorial] Automatic functions in Writer - enable / disable

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
Here is the file with which I had the problem.
I worked for hours on the outline form, but never got it to work the way I expected. I finally got this result with a combination of outline form and just adjusting the spacing from the keyboard on each line.
The file is too large to send.

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
Problems like this are why most users doing serious work on OpenOffice will leave the /view /non printing character display on. It is merely a matter of getting used to it and realising that it doesn't print, but it can help with tricky layout and odd layout problems.

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
I'm glad you were able to finish your document.I draw a simple horizontal line. Non-printing characters are on and show the line with a paragraph symbol on the left side of the line .
Maybe you would like to understand what was causing the problem?
I assume your description means that you used the menu: Insert > Horizontal ruler ... or perhaps you used the drawing toolbar to create a simple graphic. It's important to understand that neither of these have any effect on where the paragraph ends. So when you continue typing, the new characters will go in just before the paragraph marker. ¶
If you used Insert > Horizontal ruler (Plain), it does not even insert any sort of ruler. It inserts an empty paragraph that has its bottom border turned on to produce the line. So again, the paragraph is empty and the ¶ is at the left side of the line, and any typing on the line will go in at the left.
Here's a picture with the paragraph marks on and the ends circled: If you want to add text to the right of the line, the simplest approach is to use the underline characters to create the line. In the picture you can see that the paragraph mark in that situation is at the right side of the paragraph.

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
Be careful - if you have Automatic lines, or Apply Borders as they are properly called enabled this will create a paragraph border which easily wins the prize for being the most confusing feature in AOO. See [Tutorial] Automatic functions in Writer - enable / disableacknak wrote:If you want to add text to the right of the line, the simplest approach is to use the underline characters to create the line.

Re: Cannot continue with typing text after insert line
Good point!John_Ha wrote:... this will create a paragraph border ...
If you start a paragraph with underlines, pressing return will automatically replace the underlines with an empty paragraph with a border to give the line. This didn't happen with my sample document because the underlines are located at the end of the paragraph, not at the beginning.
