HELP! Others cannot open my 'saved as .doc' files

Post by yam »

Hi,

I am using OpenOffice 2.3.1 on Window XP sp2.
I wrote an essay which is 42k in size in .odt.
Then saved the essay as Word doc, it became 177k. Sent it to 2 people. Both cannot open it with Word, which says my doc is corrupted.
The 2nd time, I opened a new Word file, copied and pasted the whole essay from .odt into .doc. It became about 100k. Sent it to the same people. They still cannot open it; Word still says the file is corrupt.
But I myself can open those two files with Word in my own computer.

Can anyone tell me what's gone wrong? And what can I do? (It is crucial that they can open and read the file.)

Thanks a lot.

I assume you saved it with a .doc extension. Conversion from OOo to Word isn't perfect, but conversions are never perfect. I have converted large OOo files to Word format in the past and people didn't have problems with them. But one of my latest conversions, done with OOo 2.3.1, did yield some odd problems.

You can save it as plain text if you don't have important formatting in it.

Just to be sure, are you sure that your MS Word version managed to open it ? Could it be OOo without you noticing it ? I ask this because some users reported problems with the save as dialog ; even selecting the .doc extension, it still saved as .odt.

Can you replace the text in your file with dummy text and upload the file here so that we could check ?

The more likely scenario is that the files are being changed by the e-mail process, by the OP's e-mail client, which handles attachments differently than the recipients' e-mail. The best way to test this is to upload the files to a file-sharing site such as http://www.mediafire.com/ and e-mailing links to the files. (This is always the safest and most reliable way to transfer files, regardless.)
Cheers!
