Post by thewanderingjack »

I was trying to unmerge a cell on a new calc doc I had pasted info into, and right click had no cell options, top is missing table... etc. Brans new Win 7 re-install with all the updates etc, same with OO (4.1.3). No plug ins extensions changed options etc. Reset user folder (renamed, let it rebuild) no joy. help.

Where is your other toolbar (the Formatting toolbar)? You have switched it off?

That and the right click format cells option gives me the same Formats Cells options dialogue. Checked every tab, no merge option
Zizi64 wrote:Where is your other toolbar (the Formatting toolbar)? You have switched it off?
Off to the side, sacrificed some of the screen for size/clarity in the attachment. I did finally find "merge" on there, after clicking the arrow and checking visible buttons... but not split. I checked customize... that's a bit big, wasn't in formatting (though "merge" was)... this seems really ridiculous, I really hope I'm just being blind to something.

I never noticed there isn't an unmerge visible by default. You can add it to the formatting tool bar or to the format menu through the Tools -> Customize menu. It is listed in the Category Format and the command is Split Cells.

I get that category a Formatting, and it doesn't include split, only merge.

I finally did find the obvious one... on the side format panel which was closed by default for some reason, a merge check box in the alignment section. Checked the Format Cells options dialogue's Alignment section in case I'd missed it there before, but no. That's nice and all, but wow I would've loved to seen it in the other expected places (and would still like to if there's any way... it is mind boggling to me, as should be obvious from this post, that this does not seem to be the case).

It is not possible to split (unmerge) ONE cell of a Calc file. You can unmerge the MERGED CELLS only.
The Writer application has Split function for the cells of the text tables, but the Calc has not.

I hope you were just trying to clarify, in which case, skip the rest, otherwise:

Semantics, is this helpful? Or are you being asinine on purpose? Seems like others got my gist... to the program, merged cells are one cell for every purpose other than merging/splitting, that's how I think of them. Given that you can't split an actual single cell in Calc, you might've most rationally assumed I meant "merged cells." At least if you're going to nitpick something like that don't make the mistake of pointing out something that's already been covered (this is a short post, there's really no excuse) in the same span. It makes you look twice as foolish.

Re-readed your first post, and studied the details of your first attached picture, I suspect that you are looking for a Writer function in the Calc program.

You'd be wrong, in terms of "what I am looking for"... though maybe right in that I imagined it. if I get the way you'd say it: the Split function for merged cells in Calc (either via right click menu, maybe under Formatting or Cells or something) or via the Formatting Toolbar (where you pointed out). I'm pretty sure those do/did exist, as it is I only get it in the Properties Side Panel.

I read the Table thing while I was looking for an answer, too tired to realize/remember (til now) that'd be about Writer (thanks for that).

And you can customize the Context menus of the LibreOffice:

Clean installed a fresh downloaded OO 4.1.3 no joy. Same as before. :(. This had been working on this laptop before the fresh Win reinstall, last used then ~ 6 mo's... unless there's been an update to Win (I'd have now I didn't then).

Tried LibreOffice 5.4.0, hat seems to be working (the merge/split shows up on right click.. apparently Merge and Center in the tool bar by default, but that's ok for now.

Any explanation as to what may be up with OO would be great (aside from "must be something wrong w/installation of OO/Win or a virus... it's really none of those).

Tried LibreOffice 5.4.0,
Ohhh No!

The LibreOffice 5.4.0 is the FRESH VERSION of the office suite today.
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/
The latest "fresh" version of LibreOffice, recommended for technology enthusiasts.
The Fresh versions of the LO published for the volunteers, and the curious users...
The Fresh versions contain possibly instable new features, much more bugs, therefore they are not appropriate for daily work!

Average users (included the enterprises) strongly recommended (= must) use the latest "Still" version of the LibreOffice. The latest still version is the LO 5.2.7 (or the LO 5.3.4) today.

What you meant as "Clean install"?
You need delete (manually) the User Profile from the Windows USER directory, and the rest software parts of the AOO directory from the "Program Files " / "Program Files x86" (or the specific place of the installation of the AOO) after the automatic uninstall procedure. Then you can achieve a really clean install of the AOO.

Can you post a screenshot showing the dialog allowing a single cell to be split?

That's what I meant by clean install/uninstall. I also cleaned my registry of all OO related entries. I will try it again though, I was really tired and may well have missed a step. P.S.: Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Sigh, apparently not:

Did it again, definitely got everything, everything is mostly fine. All the defaults came up so I could find them easily (tool bar and side panel).

So the only thing is the right button menu doesn't show Merge when i select multiple cells (which was what I was originally looking for), but maybe it never did, maybe I was thinking Libre (i'll prob stick with that) or even Excel. Thanks again :).

I realized this isn't true in OO/4.1.3. Split Cells doesn't exist, Merge Cells does this when applied to merged cells. The lack of clarity was confusing me (to me it should say Merge/Split, but I get it), along with the button having gone oddly missing... I think I must've been mixing programs in my head.

The "Split cells" toolbar item exists and works in the AOO 4.1.3. But you must add it to the toolbar:
Split_cells.png

Yes, there are some differences between the AOO and LO.
The floating menu of the AOO not contain the Merge/Split items, and not possible to customize the floating menu,
but the floating menu of the LO contains the Merge/Split items by default, and you can customize the floating menu.

Not on mine:

The function exists for me, but it IS the Merge button... so if I select two cells I can click that to merge them, and then click it again to split them (I can also click Merge after selecting merged cells and it will Split them). Pretty much like the check box in the side panel. Are we on different OSs? I'm using Win7.

P.S.: OK... I finally found Split cells (in OO 4.1.3)... maybe it is what you meant: I first had to add it to the available selections to be able to add it to the toolbar... i.e.: it is not on the "visible buttons" you can turn on and off by default. I realize this is what FJCC was (probably) talking about, and you as well, before... I was missing the step of actually "adding" it to the list (so it could be enabled), as opposed to just enabling it... Now it really makes sense, esp considering that since Merge does the same thing, Split is redundant, so of course it's buried. Well, I was being obtuse and got there the hard way but did finally get there. Thank you all (who tried to be helpful) :-D.

Yes, there is a Button with label "Add" on my attached picture. You can browse in all of the available functions (sorted by category) when you clicked on the button. I wrote: "add" a function to the list, but not "hide/unhide" the listed function of the toolbar.

considering that since Merge does the same thing, Split is redundant, so of course it's buried.

I think, Leroy asked the Context TAB in the customize feature. The possibility to modify the Context menus exists since the version LO 5.2.x.
