MS Works Wordprocessor & MS Works Spreadsheet Compatibility

Post by David L. Dyke »

I am new to OOo. My wife used to work at a computer 'start-up' company. She had access to IT and also used the MS Office Suite. I used MS Works at home because it was cheap. Now I find that files created in Works are not 100% compatibile with professional organizations using MS Office.

I am thinking of DL'ing OOo. Are my already created files (in MS Works) compatible with OOo? For example: Files created in MS Works Word Processor are they compatible, and can they be read and saved by OOo's Writer, and

Can my files created in MS Works Spreadsheet be read and saved by OOo's Calc?

Can/should I leave MS Works on my HD and will I have conflicts with OOo? Or is it recommended I delete Works and then install OOo?

You obviosly can/will respond to this board, but a simple e-mail to my e-mail adress would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dave (dld<at>rglobal.net)

There are several options explained in the OpenOffice.org Wiki: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wik ... .wps.29.3F

Two easy options from that list are:

- Use an online document converter and convert the Works documents to ODF
http://www.google.com/search?q=wps+converter+online

- Open each document in Works and save as RTF, and then open the RTF docs in OpenOffice.org

The same basic tips apply to spreadsheets. Save them as CSV (from Works), or use an online document converter, and then open them in OpenOffice.org.

OpenOffice.org can peacefully live alongside any other Office suites you happen to have installed. You should pay attention to the file associations though. During the OpenOffice.org install you are given the option to associate MS Office docs with OpenOffice.org.

OpenOffice.org can save documents in the ISO standard ODF file format, or in MS Office format.

Another solution use Go-OO, or OxygenOffice, which are derivates from Sun OOo version, and contains MS Works import filters. Import your files and after that you can uninstall MS Works.

It's really not a good idea to put your naked email address into public forums like this. Not unless you have a craving for spam ;)

If you question has been answered please go to your first post and use the Edit button, and add [Solved] to the start of the title. You can also select the green tick icon.
