[Solved] Where to get or how to create a UK version please?

Post by fred2 »

Is there a ready-made UK version for downloading anywhere please? If not, how do I create one from the US version please?

Thanks.

Please search the forum, this has been discussed previously. Please also tell us something about you system as the availability of localisations depends on your platform.

If you are looking for an en-GB dictionary, that should be installed by default, you just need to select it. Interface is more complex.

OOo 2.0.2 was the last where there was an official en-GB build and that was only because Pavel Janik put one together for just that build. There have also been language packs but there doesn't seem to be a recent en-GB one either. The reason for this will be that no one has been kind enough to volunteer to be the en-GB maintainer.

Thank you for your reply, but I did search before asking the question, and have done so again, without finding anything about this topic.

How/where do I select a British-English dictionary please?

Would a solution be to obtain the older British version mentioned, and then update it?

Thanks.

Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages, then under 'Default languages for Documents, Western Languages box select 'English UK'. If the 'ABC' symbol shows next to it, the dictionary is installed. If not you can install it from the wizard under File > Wizards > Install new dictionaries.

Next, restart OOo and test the spellchecker with some UK/US testcases like colour/color.

That wouldn't work unfortunately. Any update would change the language to whatever language the update was.

You can install language packs to either the US English or to any other localization, making available the additional languages via Tools > Options > Language settings > User interface.

They are not quite easy to find:
Go to the extended mirrors list, then choose a mirror site near you, and then go to the folder ./extended/2.4.1rc2/.
The right file for British English for Win XP is OOo_2.4.1rc2_20080529_Win32Intel_langpack_en-GB.exe.

Thank you EdH and Phil. I have now set the default to UK english.

I see I also have several other languages ticked with ABC next to them. Is there any way of deleting them to save space and avoid conflicts please?

Thanks
