I've been searching the forum for hours and can't make it work. I have a Dell PC with Windows 7. I had until last week an old Dell inkjet all in one, I could scan anything into OpenOffice writer with it. It finally died and I bought a Brother Laser L25LDW with a scanner. Installed it succesfully and updated OpenOffice. I can print easily from Writer to this new Brother printer.
I know the scanner communicates with Writer because when I click "Insert->Scan" it comes up, and when I select "preview scan" it does a quick scan and shows in the window. However, when I select "Start" to scan, it scans, but then when finished, nothing happens! The writer page remains blank, no image appears. Please help! I scan documents for my small business almost daily.

Re: Writer won't display image from scanner
Please refresh your old OpenOffice software to the latest LibreOffice or Apache OpenOffice suite, and/or update your signature.Open Office 3.3, Windows 7 (not my idea)
What type of picture was created the old scanner, and what type of picture will create the new one? Use the PNG or the JPG type, but never use the BMP type.
What resolution works the new scanner with? How you will optimize the pixel resolution and the size of a directly scanned picture?
My suggestion:
Scan your pictures into file, optimize it first with a third party software, and then insert it into the writer document.

Re: Writer won't display image from scanner
Have you selected the source correctly now that you have a different scanner? The source is remembered - is Writer looking for your old scanner, and running your old scanner software (which I doubt you uninstalled) so nothing is being scanned?
1 Insert > Picture > Scan > Select source > select the new scanner
2 Insert > Picture > Scan > Request ...
I do all my scanning with IrfanView. Start IrfanView > File > Select Scan/TWAIN source ..., to set up the scanner. To take a scan go File > Aquire/Batch scanning ..., and it works. Adjust the pixel count, crop, clear the background noise etc, then save as a JPG if a photo, and insert the JPG file; or copy direct into AOO if a graphic (eg PNG).

Re: Writer won't display image from scanner
I fat fingered the signature, please read my entire post, I just installed the latest version yesterday. Also, I never typed "(not my idea)" in my signature bar so I have no idea how that got there (?!).
Please review my entire post as it will answer all the questions y'all are asking. I KNOW that the scanner is talking to Writer because I can preview scans on the command Insert->Picture->Scan->Request. The scanner shows up. It works. I have tried it on all three options Web, Text, and Photo, and on every single file type with each, .BMP, .PNG, .JPG, etc. etc. When I had my old Dell scanner it didn't matter what the resolution was, I could choose it, what the file type was, or if it was optimized, whatever, it scanned stuff and put it in the Writer doc. That's all I care about. I don't need it optimized, I don't need any of that. I just need to be able to scan stuff in to writer, like I've been doing for the last 5 years. Please help, Thanks!

Re: Writer won't display image from scanner
Also, John_Ha, I absolutely uninstalled all of my old printer and scanner files, every single one, drivers, everything. I even went in to Program Files and deleted the remnants.

Re: Writer won't display image from scanner
Like John_Ha I do all my scanning to an external program and import only optimised files into OpenOffice. That said, I know that old scanners and earlier versions of Windows used TWAIN drivers; later versions of Windows use WIA (Windows Image Acquisition). It is my memory, from earlier discussions on the Forum, that OO does not use WIA, but is happy with TWAIN. If there are TWAIN drivers for your scanner you should install these. After installing any system level drivers it is always good to restart Windows, so that it can detect such changes.
I may be utterly wrong - I am relying on memory and haven't used Windows except very occasionally (and only older Windows versions at that) in the last eight years.
