[Solved] Program Crashes when saving

Post by joslin@queensu.ca »

Hi folks: I am using Version 4.1.3 on a Windows 7.0 PC. Recently when saving this particular spreadsheet (~300K in size) the program crashes with the message "The program has stopped working" Close. I have tried splitting the file up but during that process the program crashed. It is hit or miss; maybe one in three times it saves just fine. It seems particular to this file, although the other files I work with are not spreadsheets.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Bill

If you are not already doing so, try saving in .ods format

Thanks, the file was created with and saves in .ods format.
I have tried saving in Excel format but I get a Java error "JFE" is defective.
Today again it is hit and miss as to whether the file will save or not.

If the file is not confidential you might want to post it at a file sharing site such as Dropbox or Mediafire and let someone here have a look at it.

Beautiful day, isn't it?

Thanks for the reply. The file does contain family financial information that I would rather not post.

Have a look at Villeroy's response here viewtopic.php?f=9&t=85596&p=399111&hilit on how you might want to anonymize data.

Generally for a problem like this, the data in the file is irrelevant.

I was able to save the file as an Excel file (after installing the 32 Bit Version of Java and telling OO where the JEF location was).
I can now open the file in OO Calc and except for losing some macros the file seems intact.(formulas and formatting etc.)
So far I can edit and save OK.
My theory is that whatever was crashing the program got stripped out when saving as the Excel file.
I am happy letting the file think it is an Excel file as long it saves.
I could now save it as an .ODS file and see if the problem comes back but I am a little gun shy at this point.

No need to be gun shy. You have a version saved in a format other than .ods, so saving the file in .ods format will not affect the file that was saved in the non .ods format (Excel formats use the .xls extension)
