Hiya, I've been using OpenOffice for a long time with no problems. However, recently I tried to open up a file I was working on and it loaded up a ASCII message. Every time, no matter what I choose, I've been unable to open the file properly. It would just load up 5 pages straight of #s. Now, I've been looking around the forums on this topic, and I can find only a few posts about this problem, and they were made a long time ago, and OpenOffice has been updated since then. I've tried everything and nothing will work. I'm sorry if this has already been answered on the version I've been using, I looked and couldn't find anything on it.
Windows 10, OpenOffice 4 I think, because that's what comes up whenever I load it. And it is an .odt file according to properties. Is this file corrupted? Is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future?
Also, I have the file attached if it loads

A damaged file, I fear. I could get nothing from it, either with OO or wth an archive manager.

Your best hope of recovery is to try and undelete any temporary file OpenOffice was using. As soon as possible do the following:
Download Recuva or PhotoRec (only one needed) and let it do an indepth recovery of deleted files on your computer. You may get a file containing some or all of your data (or not). Do this as a first priority; other use of the computer may overwrite any existing but deleted files and prevent their recovery. There is no guarantee that you will recover anything useful.
Your file may be damaged because of over-hasty close down of the comuter before the internal housekeeping was complete. You should always use the formal shutdown process and wait a few seconds before powering off to be sure that all write buffers (hardware and software) have flushed.
