A rant, as I leave...

Post by Mike R »

I recently downloaded OO, to try to wean my way off of Microsoft. I have some, but not a huge amount, of computer skills. I immediately ran into a problem with combo boxes. Voo was kind enough to guide me through the process, and that issue was solved.

However, I have run into a numerous other problems with the program, such as insisting on entry into fields that I have designated as no entry needed, forgetting what I have saved and reverting to other settings, having what I type in one record changing the entry in all of them, and error notices that don't seem to change, no matter what I do. Although some may be, I don't think that ALL the issues are related to the chair/keyboard interface. I enjoy learning new programs, but the frustration level on this one is just too high.

I am very disappointed, and will go back to Access. Maybe when this program and the documentation is more ready for prime time, and less skilled users, I'll try it again.

You are quite right, BASE is not at the level of usability of ACCESS, and I am also very frustrated when I try using it for more than a simple record handling tool. On the other hand, I saw the other day in this forum a small application to manage a library and I was impressed by what you can achieve when you master the complexity of the tool. So, I believe that a few steps could really make BASE more usable:

1) A set of "how-to's", describing some semi-advanced features like having a form and a sub-form, filling in a combo-box with data from a table, filtering records in a control based on the content of another control.

2) A step-by-step construction of an application, like NorthWind in ACCESS, showing many techniques in a clear way. Personally, I learn a lot by looking at the code written by others, and I believe that it will be a good marketing tool for OOo.

I know this forum is not the best place to discuss enhancements, as OOo developers are not browsing it, and it is a support forum.
