[Solved] ASCII codes

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
I have open office 2.4 using Vista. Some how my writer switched ASCII codes and now I don't know which one to use. It also asks me which one I want to use. It didn't do that before. All the one's I've tried don't work right. Is there an auto selection or something. I also need to make open office my default program. Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the U.S central time.

Do you get the window asking about the encoding whenever you try to open any file? Or does it appear only on one specific file?

The ascII window comes up for any NEW file I try to open.

Hmm, that sounds like Writer can't open the default template--perhaps the file has somehow gotten corrupted.

I don't know how that might happen.

You can try File > Templates > Organize > Commands > Reset Default Template > Writer

If the final choice there does not include "Writer" or "Text Document", something like that, then my guess is that something has gone wrong with your installation and you'll need to repair or reinstall OOo.

Or just try to reset the OpenOffice.org user profile.

I have a lot of things to add so bear with me while I try to get them in a order that makes sense. First of all, under commands all I found was printer setting and updates; nothing about reseting default templates. This problem happened before and after I updated to 2.4. So reinstalling won't solve the problem. Secondly, I looked in the Templates folder then edit and found nothing. I don't know if that plays a part but I would think there should be something in there. If I am missing the default templates can I download them somewhere?

What steps are you taking to start a new document--what menu or buttons are you using?

Can you try starting OOo without any document? Use the "start" menu to launch OOo, then try File > New > Text Document.

I am able to open OOo from the desktop or "all programs". When I have trouble is when I try to open an attachment on my work site. I've done it many times before but now I get the ASCII code window. More info that might be helpful. I think this all started after I did a Windows update. Once I did that my attachments were opened by Microsoft office which is an unused trial. So the update removed OOo as my default. Should I uninstall my M. O. ? That would make OOo my default by default.

On another subject, I have to thank you for being so timely. I've gotten a responce from you the next day every time I have written. So thank you so much for working through this with me!

You can go to the Add/Remove control panel and run the Modify option. In the last dialog, you should be able to assign .doc, .xls and .ppt to OOo.
