[Solved] Layers - i.e. like a paint program

Post by Statue »

Wouldn't it be great if OpenOffice Calc had layers, much like a paint program? I.e. you want to see multiple pieces of information in each cell, that could individually be turned on and off. Has anyone seen or done anything like this?

While I have seen this process, it was a very long time ago.. ie: before Windows 3.1
I saw it at a computer show as part of a demonstration, but have never seen it since, thus I suspect that it's not generally available, and definetly not available in Calc.
There are a lot of programming problems that would have to be accommodated for in order to do this.... ie: how many layers could a sheet have. is the layer control on the entire sheet or can it be controlled on a cell by cell basis? If on a cell by cell basis, how would Calc know which cell has to show which layers?
I'm not a programmer, and these are some of the obvious questions that occur to me that would have to be accounted for... and I'm probably missing a lot that I haven't thought of.

You can do it on one "layer".
Multiple graphical layers not needed for change/switch data in a cell or cellrange. There are many features to achieve this task:
- form control elements: the form control elements located a secondary (graphical) layer, but they can modify data in the cells on the 'primary layer'.
- You can modify cell contents by Macro routines.
- Cell functions, like Vlookup(), Hlookup()... etc.
