The first time I open an OO document the program opens very slowly. 20 - 30 seconds before I see anything at all happening. Could someone give me an idea where to look to try and correct this?

It's not out of the question for OOo to take that long for a normal first-time startup, especially on a slightly older computer.
The prime suspect for slowdowns is access to local network assets--printers, shared drives--that sort of thing, or Internet access--to check for updates. If you have a slow Internet connection, you could try turning off the check for updates feature. Look under Tools > Options > OO.org > Online Update.
