Re: Documents typed in .odt not open properly in MS word
.odt is the native format used by OpenOffice. If MS Office won't open it, complain to MS, or else install and use OpenOffice. This is an OpenOffice forum.

Re: Documents typed in .odt not open properly in MS word
Have you tried with different fonts? Have you tried adjusting the spacing/kerning at Format>Character...>Position ? I read that getting this right with web pages is a considerable problem – I don't know if or how that translates to the OpenOffice display of Hindi.

Re: Documents typed in .odt not open properly in MS word
Generally, I think it should do but sometimes some fonts work better than others. Are letters formed with matras displaying correctly?

Re: Documents typed in .odt not open properly in MS word
Variation in display may be found between different Unicode fonts.
I see quite a lot of discussion regarding the problem of displaying Indic script in web browsers but considerably less regarding word-processors. You may need to elucidate more on the problems you are having.

I don't know that I can legally show the result with Mangal (despite the free downloads available) but with Lohit Devanagari I get:

Can you not use a direct keyboard input? Have you got Hindi input enabled on your computer?
