Can anyone help a newbie? previous computer had microsoft office 2003 and when i needed to see a scanned image which was tiff or jpeg i viewed it as "microsoft document imaging file". This was set up in folder options when you associate file types etc. Is there any open office alterenative to the microsoft document imaging file? I am sorry for this quite confusing post but have tried to be as descriptive as possible.

To the best of my knowlege neither "tif" nor "jpeg" have anything to do with Microsoft. Those files can be edited with almost every pixel-oriented software tool. However, the OOo component which is supposed to edit pictures is vector-oriented. It lacks tools like "pencil and brush". It provides several tools to draw, move, stretch, fill and combine geometric shapes. When you open a photo or something it gets imported as a rectangle with a picture in it. But you can not do much with the content of that rectangle. Try Menu:File>Open... <pick some jpeg or tiff>
There are many other free programs for pixel-based editing of pictures like photos.

Thank you for your quick and comprehensive reply, but i am not looking to do any editing just the ability to view a scanned image quickly and microsoft document imaging component of office allows a very quick view of any image, is there any thing like that with open office?

OOo is not an image manager so better use a dedicated application to optimize the pics (cropping, saving as png or jpg depending on the pic type, resizing, ...).

Under Windows, XnView is a smart one.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.
