Writer wont open doc files

how do i get the writer to open a doc file? i dont know if im in the right spot. if not im sorry. any help would be appreciated.

Have you read the Forum Survival Guide?
What OS and OOo version are you using?

What have you tried that didn't work? File > Open is the usual way to open a .doc (or any other) file.

no i havent but i will. i have windows professional 2000 and i downloaded OO november 2007. so what ever the version that one was 7 months ago.

i made a mistake in the file type. its whatever word 2008 is using. is it .dox or something like that.

There are many ways to open docx files. Here is my short list:
* odf-converter-integrator to convert .docx files for OpenOffice.org
* OxygenOffice with .docx import
* OpenOffice.org 3.0 coming September 2008
* Zamzar as an online .docx converter

Also, you may want to install the Office 2007 fonts.
