Turn off formatting marks?

Somehow the formatting marks have been enabled. Does anyone know how to disable these?
OpenOffice3.1 on Windows 7

Try removing the selection from the menu item View -> Nonprinting Characters.
OpenOffice 4.1 on Windows 10 and Linux Mint
