[Solved] Memory hungry OOo on WinXP

Post by draglyar »

OOO 2.4.0
WnXP Pro 2002 SP2

Hello there, I think what I've got here is a problem: Open Office takes about 260 MB of memory with one normal Writer doc opened (that is what Task manager shows). It loads very slow, and generally works very slow because my system has a total of 490 MB RAM.

On the other hand, other apps work fine, even msoffice opens the same docs as as if opening plain text files.

Is this normal? I just want to do what I did easily with that old OOO on my old 256MB PC, maybe 3 years ago :)

Thanks in advance

Remove all dictionaries that you don't use and uncheck the Check in all languages setting in the Spelling checker options is a good start. OOo takes up over 56 MB on my system, that's a lot, but it works. Does it use so much memory with all files? In that case I'd say there's something wrong with your installation.

ok, here is whate we've got: OpenOffice.org Hunspell SpellChecker takes about 160MB at once when turned on (that is ridiculously much in my opinion), and when off - there is no spellchecker in the documents. Is there an option to use spellchecker without using so much memory?

Do what floris v has advised, see here for the details: 2. Removing all these extra dictionaries I don't need.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

NB: moved your thread to the Setup and troubleshouting forum.

Thanks for help, it works now. I left only UK and US English and ooo takes up only about 60MB.

Just a suggestion to guys that make OOO:
why don't you make the program not to load all those dictionaries at startup of a fresh-installed ooo?
Now I installed the program and again I have to search these forums again to see what text file I had to modify(and that is definitely NOT user friendly  ) . So, what we've got here is that a fresh installed ooo on a 512 MB system is practically unusable.

I'm with you. Why bundle all these exotic language files???

I guess that it will change in the 3.0 release: dictionaries should be delivered as extensions. I hope that they won't be all activated by default. Wait and see.
