[Solved] Recognition of fonts in OS X

I'm having trouble getting OO writer to recognize some of the fonts in my library. I noted some discussion of this in previous threads, but it all was windows specific. The font list that appears in writer appears to take fonts from the Library/Fonts/ on the hard drive as well as the user Library/Fonts/, I have installed some new fonts in "Font Suitcase" format; they are in both of these folders, and I have tried also putting them in Library/Application Support/OpenOffice/Fonts as well. (And restarted the computer also, of course!) However I can't get OpenOffice writer to recognize them, and there are other fonts in the font libraries that it does not register as well, although there are other "Font Suitcase" fonts that work.

The only font manager that I use is the Mac "Font Book" application.

The new fonts that I am trying to use have a copyright, but they work in other applications, and there are some fonts not working in OO that do not have copyrights.

Have you tried spadmin to add fonts? It should be in the openOffice2.4/program folder (but not sure for Mac).

I don't find "spadmin" anywhere on my hard drive. I only have the application in Applications (no OpenOffice folder), and I don't see anything in the Library/ApplicationSupport. BUT . . . I just realized that I'm a little behind in updates (on 2.2) so let me try fixing that.

Okay, after hours of groping I managed to get the font I need, but not in a very efficient way. When I first installed 2.4 it automatically took some fonts from the library of the hard drive, but for some reason not the ones I needed (maybe because they were copied to the Application Support/OpenOffice.org/2/user/fonts folder? Or because the version of them in the hard drive library was not installed correctly?). It also failed to recognize some fonts that were working fine in 2.2, which I was able to solve by copying these to Application Support/OpenOffice.org/2/user/fonts as .ttf files (this strategy did not work with suitcase files). I got the fonts I needed by clearing all the new fonts from all libraries, reinstalling them to the hard drive library with Font Book, and completely reinstalling OpenOffice 2.4.

There must be an easier way to do this: In particular, there must be an easier way to get OpenOffice to update its font list without having to completely reinstall it.

Perhaps it will be improved with the future porting of OOo for Mac.
