[Issue] Report with Chart won't run in AOO 3.4.1

Post by Nocton »

After upgrading to 3.4.1 I find that my reports with charts will not run. I'll not give the error messages here, unless thought relevant. Deleting the chart allows the report to run. I use Oracle Report Builder extension. Searching the Forum I find on another thread http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... rt#p246365 that r4zoli said:
The reports with charts, do not fetch, because of changes in AOO 3.4.x chart, and these changes not followed by report builder, which development stopped. Delete chart in design view, then report other part will work. The charts can be created in Calc, when you use your database as data source in Calc.
Do I understand from this that 3.4.1 does not support charts in reports? If so, it is rather poor and I am sorry that I 'upgraded' from 3.3.0. Or is there a fix for the problem?

AOO 3.4.1 not aware to the report builder, the changes happens in chart module day by day as bugs fixed, and Symphony code merge. The report builder not changes, the difference will be bigger and bigger, until someone thinks it is needs to be changed and start report builder development out of AOO development cycle, or create new one with AL 2.0 license compatible.

Workaround use LibO when charts needed in report, it has other bugs as well, not solved in report builder.

If I understand you correctly, r4zoli, you are saying that the report builder is not supported or even considered in 3.4.1? It seems to me appalling that we can have an 'upgrade' that removes features previously available without the users being informed. It may be that LibreOffice is OK, but I do not want the hassle of installing it, trying it out and then perhaps finding that the charts still do not work or that something else does not work as there is quite a bit of Basic macro code involved. Also, I certainly do not think that the other three users, who are not computer experts but ordinary people who just want to use the database as a practical tool to get the work done, want the hassle either.

However, you say
the changes happens in chart module day by day as bugs fixed
Does this mean that this bug will be fixed shortly?

Essentially we had a fully working database with lots of reports all tried and tested. After an upgrade, we now have three reports that suddenly giver error messages. If there is no straightforward solution soon, I shall have to revert to OO 3.3.0 on at least one computer. If I had known about this problem, I should never have changed from 3.3.0. And I shall certainly hesitate before implementing any future upgrades.

The report builder underlaying code based on LGPL code which is incompatible to Apache License 2.0, for this the report builder not touched. This was discussed within the PPMC, but not clearly communicated to the users.

No Base developers joined to the AOO developers, now no one working on it. No volunteer developer attended in AOO Base.

The report builder code can be fixed, if somebody find a developer willingly working on it, in separate version control place.

You needs to be reverted to the OOo 3.3, at least for report creation.

I suggest to use the latest version of AOO because it has lot of the bugfixes and fixes of security holes on other part of AOO.

Thank you r4zoli for the further information on how this happened. As someone who has never been involved in software development, it is a mystery to me how fixing bugs and security holes has affected the chart function when the report builder was not touched.

Even more mysterious, to me at least, is that if I create a new report with chart it works OK in Design mode and I can see the chart as I want with the data. As soon as I execute the report it gives the error. The information says: "An exception of type com.sun.star.lang.WrappedTargetException was caught." So the chart works, but then it doesn't. This would suggest that the bug is easily fixed by someone experienced?

I'm also still on OO 3.3.x due to ORB. Just tried LO 3.6.2.1 with ORB 1.2.3, but bad luck with graphs as well (I needed java 1.7). So lets see how things develop the coming year.

The report builder use OOo built in features, if these feature changes, the fine tunes need to be done in report builder. This fine tuning not happens from last year May.

I have now uninstalled OO 3.4.1 and reinstalled OO3.3.0, saving and copying the old fundamentalbasis.ini file to preserve my server mode settings. All went OK and my database now gives the charts in the reports as before. I shall not be doing any updating in the future until I am confident that the Oracle Report Builder has been also updated/supported.

So I have set this thread to Solved.
