The character map icon and desktop program has vanished from my pc. Is there any way to regenerate it?

Are you talking about the character map program provided by Windows XP? How is this related to Open Office? On my PC, this program is in the menu Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. The program itself is located in %SystemRoot%\system32\charmap.exe.

Thanks for the feedback. The character map is no longer listed in Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > on my pc as it was before. It has disappearred from both that location and the icon that I had placed for it on my desktop has disappeared too.

Do you know how I can regenerate it?

Right-click on the desktop
New, Shortcut
Type the Location of the item = C:\WINDOWS\system32\charmap.exe
Name = Charmap (or whatever you like)
