I am unable to select text via dragging cursor...Writer always attempts a 'move' rather than allowing me to hi-lite the text so that I can do whatever I want with the selected text.
I can only guess that this is a HUGE irritant with anyone doing word processing with Writer. MS Word does not do this by default.
What do I have to do to prevent Writer from assuming I want to do a move text?

Re: unable to select text...OOWriter always attempts a 'move'
update...
this problems occurs on text that had been converted to a URL
To get around the problem, I deleted the URL text
then TOOLS | Autocorrect then in the autocorrect dialogue I unmarked URL Recognition to prevent Writer from turning the text to a URL... so that I can edit as regular text.
I then retyped in the URL and made my changes.
I did not see any way to un-hyperlink a link via right-mouse options or otherwise.

Select the hyperlink, then Control Shift Space (default paragraph formatting).
To select part of a hyperlink, click, and shift-click to mark the end of the selection.

For information, there is an enhancement request to have a remove button in the hyperlink dialog, it may be more intuitive. You can subscribe and vote for it (up to 2 votes per issue) : Issue 7311 - hyperlink can not be removed by hyperlink dialog.
NB: what version are you using ? From the 2.3, the hyperlinks have to be clicked holding the CTRL key (to follow them) to avoid the behavior you describe here.
