[Solved] Change to LibreOffice

I was going to install LanguageTool-stable.oxt and I tried but couldn't figure out how to get it to install in the AdobeOpenOffice I recently downloaded. All of the comments said to download LibreOffice in order to use this.

Big question - will this give me two different programs or will downloading LibreOffice automatically convert all my current OO files? I noted that happened when I downloaded the AdobeOpenOffice - and I have no idea what the changes/additions were to that!

All help would be appreciated.

One more question - my publisher is using the Office version of MSWorks that has the change settings. I tried to do a merge between their MSWord file and my OO files and couldn't. They have trouble opening my OO files and asked me to send a .doc file that ended up with extra S's all over the place. What on earth can I do? And, please, keep it simple for a computer dummy. I'm a writer/author and NOT a techie!

Oh yeah, I didn't want to convert it to an rtf as I "think" that will erase the comments I included with all of the changes. I'm really worried as the next file they send me will be the final edit before publication - with an erreta document.

Do you mean Apache OpenOffice?

LanguageTool is really slow on Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and on all versions of LibreOffice but the last one. The problem is fixed on last LibreOffice version and on the development builds for Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (which will be available by the end of this month).

AFAIK and unless you use some fancy graphite font specialities (LibreOffice have some regressions on the graphite engine), LibreOffice will open your Apache OpenOffice documents just fine, so you can either use LibreOffice or wait a bit for Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1.

Open Apache OpenOffice, or whatever version of OpenOffice you are using. Go to /Tools /Extension Manager and press the Add button in the middle of the borttom of that screen. Now manouevre the directory in the normal way to point to the language tool version you have downloaded - in my case this is named LanguageTool-stable.oxt - and press the Open button. It will start to install, which if I remember correctly, is leisurely. There is a progress bar near top of Extension Manager window. No need for LibreOffice. I haven't found Language Tool slow on AOO, other than opening a large (300+ page) file, which takes about 20 secs as Language Tool scans it.

Thanks for the response. I think my problem lies with my browser, Mozilla Firefox. I downloaded the LanguageTool-stable.oxt but can get it to open to save to my hard drive. I think I will try IE to see if that works.

Well, that was weird, I tried to download it and it was DENIED!!!!!

Now it just said something about not being able to load something to do with Java - according to my information, I have the latest version of Java.

Okay, I downloaded the latest Java software.
I then downloaded the LanguageTool and tried to add it using the Extension Manager. Then, it gave me "Could not create Java implementation manager" !!!!

What the devil is going on?

Downloading or installing programs may change the file descriptions and icons if the default program changes, but no change is made to the files.

Well, I installed LibreOffice and, as someone indicated, it converted the files. The only think I notice is having to add a whole lot of words to the standard dictionary that were in the OpenOffice files. I'll try adding the LanguageTool in the next day or two.

It converted the file associations, which are the default program settings in the Windows. A converted file is a file which has been modified to a different file format. LO, OOo and AOO use the same file formats, so no files need to be converted.

My sincere thanks to all for the suggestion to convert to LibreOffice!!!!!
I was able to add LanguageTool and will no longer have to convert the file to MSWord to do a basic grammar check. I really like the squiggly blue underline showing possible grammar problems.

My major problem was that the additions I made to the standard dictionary of OO did not carry over to LO. So, as I go along, I have to add lots and lots of words I've added over the months and years of writing. But, even that is an advantage as I had one set of Spanish words set up alphabetically for the English equivalent. Now, as I am reversing it, English to Spanish, it's giving me a chance to get things cleaned up.

I guess I'll now have to find a LO users forum for future help?

My only problem is when I tried to open a Word Pad application to create a document in rtf. it opens a LO file that looks and acts live every other LO file. Why?

Same as before. The file association changed. The file format did not.
