I did a search for 'upgrade to new version' but came up empty.
Previously, I had installed Writer and Calc using the 2.2 installer, which put the program in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.2\.
When I run the 2.3 installer, it seems oblivious to the fact there is a previous version installed*, and shows its intention to install to C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.3\
I don't want two versions installed, I just want to upgrade the one I already have. Is that possible?
Do I have to uninstall 2.2 completely and install 2.3 from scratch?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
(*That seems pretty stupid. Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird do this in a much more elegant fashion. When 2.3 displayed the green arrow in the upper right, I expected it would know how to update itself. I suppose on a Linux system, you'd update using the package manager, like yum, apt or synaptic.)

Re: How do I upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3?
The upgrade process in OOo involves uninstalling the old version before installing the new. If you don't uninstall the old version first, it will be automatically uninstalled by the new version's installer.
Re: How do I upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3?
SImply go for the "custom installation" option during install and install 2.3 in the 2.2 folder. I agree the whole process could be much more elegant.

Re: How do I upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3?
In my case, 2.3 was installed to a new directory, but 2.2 was removed at that, leaving only some custom settings etc. And I just deleted the 2.2 directory.
AOO 4.2.0 (of 2015) / LO 7.x / Win 7 / openSUSE Linux Leap 15.4 (64-bit)

Thanks for your prompt replies.
I ended up uninstalling 2.2 and installing 2.3 into C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\
It's strange that it puts the version number in the folder like that. A few other apps on my system do the same, it seems wrong. But then, I'm an IT guy, I like to micromanage things like this, it's in my nature.
