Can't load oos files

Post by bob.swift »

I have .oos files created from a previous version of openoffice. Not sure exactly what version, but it may have been V1.x. or V2.1. I upgraded to 2.2 on one computer (Windows XP) and when I try to open the file I get a "filter selection" dialog. When I choose open office v1.0 spreadsheet it opens an empty spreadsheet. Is there some other format to use for a .oos file?
I also did a new install of 2.4 on another computer (Vista) with the same result. If these formats are no longer supported is there a way to convert them to a new format or a way to install a version of openoffice that supports these files. I regret not leaving them in xls format!

"oos"? Never saw this suffix. Spreadsheets generated by the OpenOffice.org spreadsheet component Calc use to save standard office files with suffix "ods" unless specified otherwise. Version 1 (until 2005?) used to use a similar file format with suffix "sdc". Even if the file name has a wrong suffix or none at all, this office suite detects all sorts of file formats quite well, particulary it's own ones. So I suspect that you try to open the wrong file or the file is corrupted.
If it is smaller than 100kB and not too confidential you may upload it here so the experts can have a look at it. Can you rename it with a ".zip" suffix and open it with a zip-tool? All the office files are zip-archives basically.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

.oos was OpenOffice.org Spreadsheet in some early development versions of OOo 2.0 when OpenDocument was still in development. I remember it from around 680m62. The extension changed definitely prior to 1.9.79 and ODF didn't become final til around m92. You won't find anything to open that file other than an old development build of OOo. This is why Alpha builds really should not be used for work.

Word OOo 1.1.5 work?
 Edit: Will OOo 1.1.5 work?
It was still available a few months back. I heard rumblins about maybe freeing up some server space, so I don't know. "FileHippo dot com" used to have links back to the horizon for many things. You could try there but it might have just been a link to OOo main.

Thanks for all the replies. I certainly didn't think I was using a non-production version, but it was a quite a while ago. I did unzip it and found the xml content. Started with: "<office:document-content xmlns:office="urn:oasis:names:tc:openoffice:xmlns:office:1.0" xmlns:style="urn:oasis:names:tc:openoffice:xmlns:style:1.0 ...". Given that, at least I can dig out some data from it.

You can try to copy and paste the part of the content.xml file dealing with your data in a new one from a blank .ods spreadsheet to see if you can recover something.

Good idea, but it didn't work out. I tried various operations to try to get the old one to match the new one, but still it said it was corrupted.

If there is no sensitive data, can you upload the file here? If bigger than 128kB, use a file sharing web site (like mediafire.com).
