Somewhere you can store your files?
Somewhere you can store your files?
Dear Community,
This is only meant to be a suggestion. I'm pretty sure almost everyone knows about Microsoft Skydrive, just like people know about ZumaDrive, and HP cloud drive. Well what if OpenOffice could do something like this too. I tell ya, if OpenOffice ever accomplishes something as amazing as that, I'd be well impressed, and be forever proud of the developers. I just need to know where i could suggest something like this. I understand there are no developers here. May i have the developer's site.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
I doubt very much that the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has any interest in providing storage. There may be some interest in providing on line collaboration, although even that would be a huge step.
Details of the mailing lists for Apache OpenOffice (AOO) include addresses for writing to the lists, subscribing and cancelling subscription. The developers' list would be the place (if anywhere) to make your suggestion if it relates to the AOO project, otherwise to some other part of ASF. The AOO developers' list has heavy traffic.
The AOO project is not yet a fully fledged project of the ASF.

I was also hoping that in the storage house, you'd not only be able to reach your documents, but even make quick edits where ever you may be. Such as a coffee shop, airport, or whatever. It'd be a huge step i agree. But almost every office software has its own unique storage house, and apps.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
I just contacted the Apache Foundation. And as you say kingfisher, creating a storage would be a very huge step that may not be possible at this moment. However, i would like to get people's opinion on this. So i dare the Forum community to place a comment on the idea of OOo having cloud storage for your documents. And then on the side, that cloud app, whether it'd be on a tablet or pc, you could edit your documents in the software. Please leave your comments in correspondence to this post.
Thanks,

Or use your online mailbox.
I see no point in such cloud service as an open source project. You are asking for a gratis service that's all. The software to provide the service could come from the open source but the storage capacity, the bandwidth and the security has to be paid by someone. The application in this case would be only a very small part of the service.

Lol, instead of my idea being great for the community, it turned out that no body wants it! Okay, well because my idea may never come into to action, its fine to say we "do not" need a cloud service. But while we're at it. Let's think of as much software hardware devices that could replace a monthly fee cloud drive. I have a one:
Flash Drive/USB
I double dare the OOo community to think of either the most resonable or even siliest replacement for a monthly fee cloud drive.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
Ubuntu offer free cloud storage, as far as I remember; used be 2GB, I think it is now 5GB.
On the subject of using a USB flash drive, do please read PGAGA's tutorial note
Using a USB stick with OpenOffice.org and its Derivatives
There have been so many reports of lost information when working direct to USB sticks from OpenOffice that he has kindly boiled down the Forum recommendations into a useful note. It is also the case that the limited electronic life of USB sticks is now being recognised and admitted; they are very convenient, but hardly to be recommended for archival storage. USB disk drives are more reliable in the long term.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
I've not said that. I think that it's not the role of an open source community to propose such service (for free).Cmiller wrote:Okay, well because my idea may never come into to action, its fine to say we "do not" need a cloud service.

There is a free service which begins with 10Gb. If you use a link connected with an existing user, you and that user receive an extra gigabyte.

Our friend has taken this to the dev list. The first response mentions an extension MultiCloud which is for Windows only. A later message mentions other extensions.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
Just read it on the mailing lists: Citrix submitted CloudStack to Apache Software foundation
CloudStack Submitted as the First Cloud Platform in The Apache Software Foundation
So a cloud service with AOO seems possible, after all.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
It's not clear if the question here is about having a storage place (that's how I've understood it) or if it's about integration with a cloud service.
Storage is linked to hardware and has to be paid (it doesn't prevent companies to offer free services like Ubuntu).
Integration is linked to the software and an open source solution has indeed its place because it deals with the data management and not the hardware.

Re: Somewhere you can store your files?
An oldish thread in another forum led me to this article: 7 Good Dropbox Alternatives for Linux. The last one mentioned is TeamDrive, available for Windows, Mac and Linux and it has a plug-in for OO documents:
TeamDrive is yet another proprietary online file storage, synchronization and collaboration software for Windows, Mac and Linux. Just like others, TeamDrive offers free 2GB storage space for registered users as a basic plan. To make things even more interesting, there exist a TeamDrive OpenOffice plug-in that facilitates collaboration on documents using OpenOffice.
