MS Trial doc conversion to Writer not working

Any information is very much appreciated.

I am trying to convert a MS word document that was completed before the trial version expired. The document is now locked, and I am not able to make corrections to the document. I dwnld open office, and installed Writer. In Writer, I attempt to open and convert the MS word document to the Writer version. I was instructed to use the MS XML 2003 Word filter, but after making this selection, the Writer document appears blank, without any of the information from the original MS word doc. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Which format did you actually use to save the Word documents? You can enter the file format in the search box and search the forum to see if this has already been answered.
