I'm writing my dissertation in OO 2.3 and want to create an automatic contents page based on the page styles (headings, body text etc) I've put in the actual diss, but can't find the option anywhere.

A page style has no impact on its content. The only approaching idea is to create a template or better an AutoText but it won't be page-based.

I can remember doing it in MSOffice last year for another essay, but I can't quite remember how. Thanks for the answer though, Ill certainly give it a try.

If anyone else needs an answer to this question I've managed to solve it. If you're using the styles to format headings and subheadings, then all you need to do is click:
Insert> Indexes and Tables> Indexes and Tables... and it will have a Table of Contents template already generated, so click OK.

OK, you were looking for a Table of Content! Of course. You should look at the top of the Writer forum page, there is a link to the online user guide for Writer, you'll find all the information needed.
Note that you can also hyperlink the TOC to jump to the right chapter. And using the PDF export also keeps the link in the resulting PDF file.
