Size of Writer documents in 2.4

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.

Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.4
What Operating System (version) are you using? Windows XP SP2 Media Center Edition on one PC, and Windows XP Pro on another (same results).
What is your question or comment? Documents created or modified since I installed OpenOffice.org 2.4 are much larger in terms of disk space than under the previous version. The minimum .doc size (one page with a couple of characters typed) used to be about 10K and now it is a little over 65K. Is this normal or have I done something wrong when installing?

I have been an O-O user for about 4 years, and have a large number of .docs saved under earlier versions, and unless I modify them, they are still showing up at their former sizes.
