Is a password required after download?

Post by karey »

I teach computer applications in an online high school. Students who don't have MS pragrams are advised to try Open Office and thus far it's worked fine. But today I have 2 new students who say they are being prompted to enter a password after they download the program. What could be an explanation for this? Can anyone help me to know what I can tell these students? Thanks

Where did they download OOo and on which operating system are they installing the software?
OOo 3.2.0 on Ubuntu 10.04 • OOo 3.2.1 on Windows 7 64-bit and MS Windows XP

The standard OpenOffice.org software is free to download, copy and use. There are no registrations, logins, or passwords required by the OpenOffice.org website or the software itself.

It sounds like either they've gone to the wrong site to get the software (just go to www.openoffice.org), or they've downloaded some other software package.

You should be aware: there are quite a few sites that offer to sell the OpenOffice.org software. This is legal and permitted. However, it is not necessary to pay for the software or to register in order to download it. Just make sure you go to the openoffice.org site.

Another reason could be that the operating system asks for some admistration password before install.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.
