I looked up the tutorials and guides and stuff, but I'm not figuring this simple thing out. I just want to make a pie chart. My data is entered with the category labels in row 1 and the quantities/values in row 4. The quantities are whole numbers, not percentages.

I just did a quick test and believe that you will need to have the two rows together. Highlight the cells and then Insert-> Chart. Select the Pie chart from the selection and make any changes then Finish.

Re: Pie Chart Basics
It is possible to make the chart without the rows being together. Do Insert > Chart with just row 4 selected (in this example), then after choosing the Pie Chart type desired, step through the Wizard up to Data Series, then select the row 1 categories with the Categories shrink button toward the lower right of the dialog.
You can also just create the chart, then right-click on it and do the above through the Data Series option.

Okay, so I got what you showed me to work perfectly, but I realize, after some fiddling around, that my question needs to be qualified and made more complicated. I want to make a pie graph of only column 1, 2, and 4, skipping column 3. When I try to do this by making the various data series on the screen you show above. I make the names and Y-values using the shrink button.
Actually, I just figured it out. I did the same thing that you said but instead of highlighting all of row 4, I held down Ctrl and highlighted only the columns I needed. I then copied the entire data range value on page 2 of the wizard to the "Range for Name" on page 3 of the wizard. I then changed all the 4s to 1s. Then I hit "back and clicked "first row as label" on and "first column as label" off. It has to be done in this order or it doesn't work. I don't know why, but when I then push "next" the data range for name is blank, though "categories" is filled in with the values for row 1. So, I just didn't touch it because it's working now.
