Oracle report builder - dragging and dropping fields

Post by oldgreygary »

Hello,

I have been using the Oracle report builder. I have created a couple of groups on the report. I have been trying to move fields within a group and from one group to another. Firstly, when I have tried to move fields in a group, I click on a field and hold down left button and try to drag. But for some reason the program takes over and moves it into the next group up. I can drag and drop back into the group below but appear to have no control of it. As soon as I try to move it upwards it gets taken over by the program and moves it up to the next group.

At the moment it seems as though I am stuck as I do not appear to have any sort of sensible control over where I can move the fields to.

Is there something that I am doing wrong? Or is there a switch or setting that I have turned on without realising it?

Appreciate any input to this as at the moment it is nigh on impossible to drag and drop any fields on the report with any sort of control.

Cheers for now

It is a known unresolved bug, until now. I hope it will be solved in OOo 3.4.
Make your edit feasible, maximize ORB window, then a will be better.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid that I have only got a small monitor so maximizing does not make much difference. However, I did find that I could use the arrow keys to move fields around. Left/right/up and down. Unfortunately, you cannot use them to move to another section. I have also tried adding fields in the page header area which seems to be a bit more stable. Then cut and paste into the correct section. Perhaps there are other shortcut keys that might work?

I also noticed that when I was using the arrows to move the fields sometimes the field would not move. This seemed to be because there was a 'ghost' field above it. I don't if that is a legacy of using the drag and drop?

Anyway, it is not ideal but it is now workable.

Cheers for now

You can insert fields into specific section, firstly select section where you want to insert field.

Secondly open "Add field" local window by clicking on it on Standard toolbar, or ALT+F8, select field and click on insert field, it will insert into active section selected field with label.
then you can move fields by using controls in "Align at sections" toolbar.
Moving between sections the CTRL+X and CTRL+V also working.

In ORB the controls could not overlap each other, ghost control (possible labels without text?) you could find if you use report navigator, it shows all controls inserted into report.

Hello,

Thanks for your responses. The options you mention are useful for navigating around the ORB.
The 'ghost' field problem does not show in the report navigator. I have had to delete the field and start again.
I guess this is the basic problem that I am having with the ORB at the moment. I cannot trust the software. I think it would be better if the drag and drop was disabled totally. It would be better to manually cut and paste rather than have the inconsistency of the drag and drop option. Lets hope that issue can be sorted.
I understand that Oracle are the custodians of the software. With all their resources and software which they currently use it should not be difficult for them to provide a quick solution!?

No quick solution only two, mostly one developer working on Base, and this means no fast solution possible, only crashes and some fine tune will be in OOo Base and ORB in near future.
