Can't add address data source in LibreOffice 3.3RC3

I yesterday installed LibreOffice 3.3RC3 from the OpenSuse repositories. I have OpenOffice 3.3RC8 installed on the same system (Opensuse 11.3KDE4.5 64bit). Prior to installing LibreOffice I used the mail merge functionality of Openoffice for the first time. When I tried to repeat the process on LibreOffice, I was not able to install an address data source in LibreOffice. I provide the screen-shots of the two programs to demonstrate the difference in the options provided.

When selecting the only available option "Other external data source" I get immediately the error "The connection to the external database could not be established. No SDBC driver was found for the given URL."

Any ideas what I missed installing?

I did also yesterday an update and it seems toe work for me.
Mozilla adressbook is never working with openSUSE.

Thats nice to know, but not what I am trying to do (Sorry for the misleading screen-shot).
I wanted to use a spreadsheet as a data source, as I successfully did in OpenOffice. However, even selecting "Other external data source", which would be the correct choice, gives me the error "The connection to the external database could not be established. No SDBC driver was found for the given URL.".

The reason I provided the screenshot is, because I think it shows that probably something went wrong during the installation.

Basically, better download from the official site and then install with the packages manager. The packages provided by the distro can be modified and less good (that's the case with Ubuntu for example).

Basically I always have two versions of OpenOffice on my system. The version provided by my distribution and the version on www.openoffice.org. I install the latter one with the script provided with the package (excluding the desktop integration).

Normally, I would agree with you with respect to the modifications provided by Opensuse. However, the above repository published the LibreOffice version the same day it was published on the official site and I don't think it really is modified compared to the official LibreOffice RC.

Moreover, since installing LibreOffice removed my 3.2.1 distro OpenOffice, I am a little concerned about installing the LIbreOffice by the provided script (I don't want to loose my working OpenOffice3.3RC9 (yes it is 9 in the meantime).

Therefore it would be nice to know, if anybody running LibreOffice from the unstable Suse repositories has the same problem or not.

BTW are you running the LibreOffice RC without the described problem on XUBUNTU?

I don't rely on the install script, it has been proved defective sometimes (but it works for some users too). That's why I use dpkg for that.

Indeed, the LibO packages may be less or not at all tweaked since GNU/Linux distros were used to use the go-oo version (but some distros are used to remove some features and others - like OpenSuse IIRC - did provide the standard version of OOo).

The removal of 3.2 has been reported indeed since the first beta, not very respectful IMHO!

I don't use the mail merge feature so can't say. And I tried LibO a short time but hasn't enjoyed so I don't use it. Wait for an OpenSuse user...

When you want work with OOo-base then don't try LibreOffice 3.3. RC 3.

I see that Libre_OOo-base is not working good.
This is true when you want modify forms embedded in OOo-base. When you use standalone forms then it seems to work good.

I noticed similar behavior under Windows. The workaround for me was to start the Mail Merge Wizard, click Next once or twice, then it gives you the option to specify where your Address List is. I navigated to where my spreadsheet csv file was located and entered that. Then I canceled out of the Wizard, pressed F4 and the csv file was added to the list of available databases.

I use to use the mail merge functionality like this since version 2.0 of OpenOffice.org:
menu:File>New>Database...
[x] Connect to existing database...
Type: <long list of database types, including "Spreadsheet">
[x] Register database
Save database.
Add some adequate queries (paper receipients, email receipients, parameter queries,...)
Open the Writer document/template.
Hit F4
Select the right record set, wait a few seconds for the records.
Drag the column headers into the document/template.
Arrange the resulting mail merge fields.
