rconstantine's earlier solution fails to fix my problem:
When i type a continuous line of repeated asterisks, this line converts to two lines (one heavy over one thin) when i terminate that string with a paragraph break (enter key). Even if it is a short string, once i press enter the solid pair of lines takes place and runs from left margin to right.
If i break the line thusly:
*********************************** *******************************
i get no solid line; but if i press enter at end of a short single line, i get:

Please, how do i prevent this conversion from taking place?

Tools, Autocorrect, Options, and uncheck "Apply Border."

Thanks for the 'reply';
but can you fill in for me exactly where? I.e.: What goes between "Options [.....and....] Apply Border"?
I cannot find the 'Apply Border' button in Writer Options??? (or in the others, for that matter).
