Compatibility with Office 2007

Post by Hanson »

Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2. something (Sorry can't recall as computer is in the office)
What Operating System (version) are you using? XP
What is your question or comment?

Hi, I was wondering if files created by Office 2007 applications can be opened by OpenOffice because I understand Office 2007 outputs in a different file format compared to previous generations of Office programs. This is because my home system uses 2007 but the office system uses Openoffice and I was wondering if I could do work at home and then transfer it to the office.

If its not possible, is there some compatibility pack that I can download so as to make it possible?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hanson,

There are many topics on these forums that already discuss this subject in detail. If you use the Search... box top right of the page and search for "MS Office 2007" or "docx" you will find the answers you're looking for.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 adds Office 2007 file format support. Though you can download an alpha copy now, the final release is in 6 months. For now, the easiest ways to open these files are odf-converter-integrator, OxygenOffice, Zamzar.com, Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, but there are other ways to read .docx/.xlsx./.pptx files too.

Oh right, I saw Clayton had referenced it, so thought it could be included for completeness. Good to know thanks.
Edit: BTW, your Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack doesn't work for me.
 Edit: Fixed :)
