[Solved] Issues with others opening my docs & spreadsheets

I just started using open office. i can read MS word and excel files on my computer however when i create a document or spreadsheet in open office and email it to someone using MS word or excel they cannot open it. What can be done to make this work?

File > Save As... choose the appropriate File type in the dialog box that opens.

The "appropriate file type" is Excel or Word.
