[Solved] Help with nested double quotes

Post by daniel_ro »

Hi all, maybe you can help me:

In Romania, when quoting, we use " " with the first " down.

But when there is a quote inside a quote we use french quotes " text text « another text » text text. How can I make Writer to use the french quotes automatically? I have been to TOOLS > Autocorect > Custom quotes but cannot manage to wok it out. How to set automatic french quotes when using quote inside quote ? Can u help?

Autocorrect works on a single word basis, it doesn't remember the use of quotation marks in the way you want. So you will have to take care of that yourself.

Exehette77 : OO is in english, Didn't download the romanian language pack from OO. I use it as it comes with the distro. The default keyboard/input language is romanian.

Floris V: can't understand whata re you saying. Can you please explain the use of that menu if it doesn't work? Can't OO detect when quotes (") are not closed and in stead of another (") to put («). Why it says replace on that menu then? Replace what?

Quotes replacement is language sensitive: to have the automatic French quotes, you need to have the language of the text set to French (or a language using those quotes). But what can't be done is the detection of nested quotes. OOo manages words, paragraphs, but it can't detect nested sentence (like Calc can detect parenthesis order for example).

So you've to insert those special quotes manually or create a special character style with French language setting: assign to it a shortcut and when you begin a nested quote, hit that shortcut, then the quotes will be replaced. When the end quote is finished, hit Ctrl+M to go back to the original style and it should be fine.

sounds very complicated but I think I got it. Yes the paragraph is set to romanian so I think it should detect them. is there a link with extended info on the issue that you can post here please? Eventually I will insert them manually but some times they are often quoted... Thanks anyway.

I need a tutorial for that section of the menu, for TOOLS > Autocorect > Custom quotes. When to check the "replace" above or bellow, what to replace with what, what is the purpose of that submenu, how to use it. :)

Thanks for your time!

If you need apostrophes a lot, using autocorrect to get your quotation marks will only get you into trouble. You can, like in Dutch, where single and double quotation marks are used, use the single and double quotation marks for your set - you can replace ' with the doubles and " with the guillemets.

That's the right spot. Now set curly quotation marks for the doubles and you're done. You set them in the same way as the guillemets.

yes, they are set, only they are not displayed as curly in the image. I remember one time I've made it work in IBM Lotus and I know it is written after OO. So you say it should work, but it doesn't. Unless I need to check/uncheck someting else, I'm afraid I'm stucked... In the image above I've set the french quotes manually, but as the settings in the image says it should have been done automatically, right? I'm confused, is it a bug or is it me?

What's the use of the menu if it doesn't opperate changes?

You have to put the check mark in both boxes, for single and double quotation marks. In the set below, for the doubles, you still have to set the replacing quotation marks.

And the language in the field is the same as the one used in the text?

Yeah, it's the same. Maybe I need to check some other boxes in the autocrect menu?

does it work with you? Because I tried with the default english language and NO.

I also tried on a Windows computer with OO from go-oo.org v. 3.2. Here it completeley replaces " with << :).

On my linux I have 3.1 from the distro.

Try the Sun version instead of the distro version.
NB: as I write in French, I confirm it works fine. And I get the other quotes when writing in English.

I reset the Dutch keyboard to find out and then the ' " keys work differently; in Dutch the Shift+2 gives ", and just " gets you an accent. You have to find out what key corresponds with " on the Romanian keyboard, then that keystroke will be replaced with the guillemets.

Floris, I know that. All is set up properly.

Hagar, that is strange, to work with you and to me not on windows, not on linux. What is the sun/oracle link to OO. Openoffice.org ?

Thanks all

Distros usually ship the Novell build (go-oo.org) version instead of the vanilla version, provided by Sun/Oracle. The latter has a better quality check and doesn't include new features developed by Novell (rather oriented MS Office compatible).
