[Workaround] Captioning Images

Post by hwttdz »

I for the life of me can't find how to insert a caption. I should be able to select an image, right click, and hit insert caption, or use the insert->caption from the main menu. However neither of these options exist? I don't know if the documentation is out of date? Any help?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I don't think there is a caption feature in Impress (but I'm not an Impress user in fact). It can be useful in Writer but in Impress, I don't really see the point.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm using impress to make a poster, my poster has images and graphs and whatnot. The graphs and images want captions. They feel very unloved.

There is no caption feature. You will have to add a text line and a sequential number by hand.

What about a textbox? You can group them is needed.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

It seems if I doubleclick on the image I can write "on" the image, and with enough newlines and creative (possibly negative if allowed) margins and anchoring I'm sure I can accomplish the desired end result. It will just take a little more effort than I had hoped. Unfortunately this workaround is limited by openoffice having a rather arbitrary (plus or minus) 3.94 inch margin limit.

Is there any reason why you are making your poster in Impress rather than in Draw or Write?

I never found OpenOffice to have any serious limit on margins. I have just experimented with an A3 page in Write; it allows me have any combination of margins within reason, reducing the text area to 0.5 x 0.5 cm. The 3.94 inches you mention probably originates from a 10cm (100mm) measurement (possibly 9.9 cm/99mm). At the back of my mind is a vague memory that changing the fundamental units used in the OOo installation sometimes reflects in minimum settings permissible; it is possible that fiddling with these might give you a 99 unit setting.
