Need Synonyms/detailed definitions on Linux

Post by TheSeb »

OpenOffice Word Processor doesn't seem to have two features that I really need in a word processor.

I'm used to MS Word for Mac, which I use together with a little program called Dictionary

The combination of 2 programs allow me to:

A. right click on a word, pick synonyms from the drop down menu: and browse through a list of synonyms.

EXAMPLE OF USE:

B. Dictionary: When you right click on any word under MacOS you can "look it up in dictionary" ... which opens a small dictionary program already set to the word you are looking for. The definition is detailed (like looking in a real dictionary)

Is there any way, through plug-ins or otherwise, that I can get those 2 very important features on OpenOffice, or Ubuntu in general.

EXAMPLE OF USE ON MAC:

AND THEN WHILE IN THE SMALL PROGRAM

I use a similar feature in Firefox. Indeed, I have two methods of using dictionary.reference.com although I have to use a search bar for thesaurus.reference.com For the desktop I have aiksaurusgtk (a Thesaurus - the gtk front end for aiksaurus); thanks for reminding me. I inevitably use Firefox when I want to check the meaning of a word or otherwise research it. Kde has kdict. The Firefox extension I use is called 'Research Word'.

So... are you basically saying that there is no way to get a simple >right-click to open menu >select synonyms to see a list?

Ahhhh, this sucks so bad. :x

StarDict might be a solution for you.
http://stardict.sourceforge.net/

You can install stardict with synaptic. I believe you'd need to then install whatever language dictionaries you need by hand, for example from here:

If your problem has been solved, please edit this thread's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line. Thanks!

It's not on the right-click context menu, but you can select a word and do Tools > Language > Thesaurus (or Ctrl+F7) to get a list of synonyms. It's a clunkier interface, but more importantly, the thesaurus doesn't seem to be very extensive.

As kingfisher said, the browser/web tools seem to be much better, but they're not integrated at all--well, you can set up the "Internet search" feature (View > Hyperlink bar) so that you can highlight text and then kick off a search for that text in your browser.

I don't know of a plug-in that will allow you to right-click in OpenOffice and select a synonym from a list.

Other tools you could use, though, are:

KTranslator (from which you can copy and paste – quite easy to use with Soule's Dictionary of English Synonyms besides Webster's and others):
