Does anyone know how to disguise hyperlink

Post by Flower »

I have just started using openoffice.org - finding it quite easy. However, when I add a hyperlink under text, when cursor hovers over text the full URL pops up. Is there anyway of disgusing hyperlink by giving it a name? It can be done in MS Office by adding a name tag. Only the name tag shows when hovering over the hyperlink and not the URL address. But when it is converted into openoffice.org this facility disappears and the full URL is shown!

I don't think there's any way around it.

However, I would say that the way OOo handles it is more robust, even if it has more potential to confuse. The user should be able to see what the link address is, before activating the link. If the link target is hidden or obscured by displaying only the link name, that won't be possible.

OTOH, a text document is not a web page--usually the document source is far more trustworthy than some random public web page, so I suppose you could make a case that the added information is not normally needed for documents. Personally, I want to know where that link is going to send me before I decide to click it.

Many thanks for that. Ok. I understand. However, I want to protect myself against the users who check and jump my code source. Is there a way of incorporating inside the pdf text an html button showing the website logo and therefore protecting the source code?

What do you mean by "source code"?

Whether the user is informed or not is a function of the application offering the hyperlink: you can't have a link without having the target address in there, so the application presenting the link can always choose to display the address or not. I don't know off the top of my head whether Acrobat Reader shows them or not.

You can always use some kind of obfuscated address, such as you get from tinyurl.com. Even if it is displayed, the user will not see the real address until they arrive. Is that what you're after?

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but
type something
highlight it
right click it
click "character"
click "hyperlink" tab
type the hyperlink in "url"
click "ok"

Is that what you wanted?
