CDs and DVDs are a read-only media. Rewritable CDs and DVDs are rewritable using whatever burning software you have, but as far as any other application, including OpenOffice.org, is concerned that DVD or CD (rewritable or write once) is still read-only.

If you burn your documents to a CD or DVD and then open them in OpenOffice.org, they will be opened as read only because OpenOffice.org cannot write any changes back to the DVD or CD.

If you save your documents to your hard drive or to a floppy disk, OpenOffice.org can save the changes you make back to the hard drive or to the floppy disk.

Does this make sense to you?
openSUSE 11.4, KDE4.6 with OpenOffice.org 3.3
