[Solved] vista hangs sometimes when opening documents

Post by easyw »

I have Vista Home Premium and I installed OOo 2.31 as administrator, using it as administrator,
User Access Control is turned off.
Sometimes (unfortunately often), when I try to open an existing document OOo hangs and I need to terminate the process to re-start the editor.
I also tried with the firewall turned off and the problem persists.

This is the report on the crash:
Program:
OpenOffice.org 2.3
A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: AppHangXProcB1
Application Name: soffice.BIN
Application Version: 2.3.9238.500
Application Timestamp: 4739b559
Hang Signature: ffda
Hang Type: 128
Waiting on Application Name: spoolsv.exe:spoolss
Waiting on Application Version: 0.0.0.0
OS Version:6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1040

I used OOo from the old StarOffice suite but I had to move from XP to Vista :(

I tried googling but I found nothing useful,
please advice

Maurice :)

First, thanks for this detailed post, quite every information needed is here. We don't see such post very often.

By existing documents, do you mean that they opened flawlessly before?

If there is no sensitive data, can you upload a sample so that we check if the problem comes from the file itself or not? If it's bigger than 128 kB, use a file sharing web site (like mediafire.com).

Hi Hagar, thanks for your reply....

Yes, the same document can be opened normally in many occasions, but sometimes it freezes the OOo suite.

yesterday I tried to increase the graphic cache (use for OOo set to 60MB, memory per object set to 10MB) and it seems to improve the stability...
Could you suggest some reasonable values of the graphic cache?

I will send you the feed back on using the suite with the cache enlarged.

thanks again,
Maurice :)

I've never played myself with the memory settings (because I've an old laptop so don't think it can change something in my case) but it can indeed improve the situation according to other reports here.

I guess you use ODF file format, do you have lots of graphics? Make sure that the pics have been optimized (size reduction, format, color depth, ...).

Hi Hagar,
it seems to be solved :)

I used this settings
1) Reduce the number of Undo steps to a figure lower than 100. ->30 steps.
2) Under Graphics cache, set Use for OpenOffice.org to 128 MB (up from the original 6MB).
3) Set Memory per object to 20MB (up from the default .5MB).
4) Set the number of objects under Cache for inserted objects at 20.
5) Check OpenOffice.org Quickstarter.
* Now highlight Java on the left panel, uncheck Use a Java runtime environment
that i found at
http://www.zolved.com/synapse/view_cont ... _in_Ubuntu

probably the memory settings were less important than to unckeck Java runtime environment (my version is standard edition 6 build 1.6.0) anyway now it seems not to hangs anymore....

Thanx again for your support, I will keep informed if this is completely solved in the next days...
