[Solved] How to Open MS Office files with OOo

Post by lovebears »

My microsoft office word 2003 stopped working because a window popped up and said I needed a sku112.cab file and I didn't know what to do. I always opened my email files with microsoft word when people sent me a file. So I downloaded Openoffice but I can't open a file with it. It is a doc file and when I type the file name it it doesn't recognize it.Can anyone help me? It would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: How to open file with Openoffice

Hi and welcome to the forums.

You need to tell Windows what program to use to open what type of files. This is called File Association.
Running this utility should set the associations correctly: OOoAssociation Utility.

If this has answered your question please go to your first post and use the Edit button, and add [Solved] to the start of the title. You can use the green tick icon at the same time if you like.

Thank you so much. I did that and I have another question. I had a email file that was songbirds. It opened the file but there was no music. It said read only. I clicked on insert and object but it wouldn't click on music. Are all these programs read only? Thanks for any help

What type of file was it? If it is a .wav or .mp3 or similar sound file, then it wouldn't open in OOo it would open in whatever appropriate player you had installed on your PC.

Do you know what the embedded media type is?

(That is, it is a .doc file with something inserted into it - I'm wondering what the 'inserted thing' is.)

If it is an attachment, what is the type of it? Right click on it, and select Properties. We need to know the three letter extension.

.gif is the picture part. Is there perhaps anotherr, maybe .wav or .mp3, perhaps of the same name or the name of the Streisand song.

Edit: if you double click on the .gif file you probably will get the bird picture.

I had a friend email me a pps slide show with music and when it came up there was music but the slide show didn't work and when I clicked on the slide show it started working but the music stopped. Is there somewhere I can click on sound when the slide show begins? Sound is greyed out. I emailed her songbirds and it played on her computer. I've been googling this problem and other people has had this problem but I don't know how they fixed it. This is what one person said but I don't know what these things are and are they safe and where I would get them or how would I know if I have them? This is what they asked. Do you have all of the suggests installed for impress they are:

gstreamer0.10-plugins-base, gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

If not then install them and see if it works. Should I download these? If so do you know where I can get them. I'm so sorry for all the trouble but I appreciate it so much for any help.

As far as I know these are codec collections for Linux/Debian/Ubuntu. I doubt they will work on your Windows computer. The whole subject of codecs and multimedia on Windows seems to be a mystery, cured by trial and error, loading assorted collections of codecs.
