Word counter

Post by ERR »

Ok get a grip on this
I wrote another letter counted the words 522 I put this number into the document closed it down, went to work opened it up after I got home counted it again I got 523 (because I added in "522 words")
I then added in 7 more lines on two paragraphs run the counter and got a word count of 496.

That completes my entry to this thread.
Sorry I lost my cool last time, but if people just word their posting a little better none of my "comments" would of been made and I would of been a lot more helpful this time. I WILL NEVER RESPOND TO POSTING ON THE "WORD COUNTER" AT THIS FORUM DUE TO THE WAY I LET DOWN THE MODERATOR ON THE LAST THREAD I MADE.

1) I'm pretty sure that nobody has come across your problem before - I certainly wouldn't use a word processor that can't count or sort words (and for that reason I once discarded Word 97, because it can't sort, even though I paid a lot of money for it  ).
2) Nobody in this forum gets paid for sharing their knowledge. Just now I'm answering you for zilch. :P Think that over. We didn't design the software, so we're not to blame for any errors in the software, only for bad advice we give you. If you want to continue in your present fashion, all you'll achieve is that you expose your lack of maturity. I can tell you this: I'm not amused. :x But I'm not impressed either. I've seen worse on other forums. Better rethink your strategy, mate. 8-)
3) Foxcole is one of the most helpful and considerate people I know on the 'net. It's true that his reply to your post didn't answer your question or rant, but that's largely because he wanted to explain something to you that you didn't and probably still don't understand. Besides, he wants to solve problems and if a problem can't be solved, find a workaround. Which gets us to
4) It doesn't help you one jot to come here to whine about how bad OOO sucks. You don't get your document's words counted that way. See? To solve your problem, you must first find out how your publisher actually counts words. Some simply use an estimate (going back to the days when there were no programs to count words). You make a manual count as follows: count the words on a few lines and take the mean. If you have lines with 12, 14, 11, 13 words, you'd get 12.5. Multiply by the number of entire lines and you have a rough estimate. Improve it by adding an estimate for the last lines of the paragraphs. For finding out why you get those weird results you'll need to provide more information. Everybody here gives that freely, as you can easily find out. If you actually want people to help you, better change your attitude. 8-)

First I did NOT come here to "whine about how bad OOO sucks" if that is how I felt about OpenOffice I would never of wasted my time coming here I would of just let everyone find out the hard way

It got up my back when the first too people who replied to my other posting took such a negative response, I was only trying to help, I Think Openoffice is a excellent product for students but what good is it going to to do if they fail their education because they were given a assignment to do with a word limit, and the "Word counter" let them down it is going to get their backs up for the rest of their life

My suggestion is carry on using OpenOffice I have used it ever since the free Star Office series Sometime ago it could of been a few months or a years ago I typed a letter and did a word count, I think on reflection if could of been wrong count, because at the time I did think the count was a bit odd, But in the mean time when using word count double check

By the way when you say If you actually want people to help you, better change your attitude.

In my opinion you people are the p........... OK moderator lets not go down that track again.

I never came here asking for help, I just telling you I have found "Word counter" faulty, I have so far at this web site forum given you two reasons, I will test the the newer versions of OpenOffice when they come out and report to someone somehow.

My advice: if you want me to help you narrow this problem down, you need to change your attitude

Yes. Thanks.

If you manage to reproduce the problem with your text, you should file a bug report (see the Survival Guide for the forum) and attach the file (devs like that I think). Perhaps your text contains many glyphs that confuse OOo. You can also post it here so that we check if the issue is with the file or with your installation (your OOo not being able to update the word count as requested).

Thank you Hagar de l'Est

If they were all like you I would dedicate my life to making OpenOffice a better product NOT throwing rocks (at this forum members).

While there was a comment to do with attitude we can all learn from this and I could also make a small adjustment.

Thank you for your positive response and because of this I will start to make my adjustment, I am using Windows 98se at the moment but I am due to go to XP professional soon, with both faults the file were saved and written in *.odt file format with the latest version 2.3.0, I will see if I could make a useful off topic story later to try and duplicate the fault, if the fault occurs I will post it. (and before anyone takes a dig how do we know there might be students (just for example) and all they can afford is the old windows operating system)

2.3.0 is not the latest version, 2.3.1 is. it might be worth to see if upgrading changes anything.
In any case, bug reports related to old versions of the program are probably not that useful to the devs.
