I realize that this is a free program, and that volunteers are trying to assist in answering questions but the only conclusion which I, and I am sure many others have to come to is that Spell Check just does not work in this product. I have spent quite some time in the help and forum sections trying to find out what I am doing wrong, and if indeed I am doing something wrong than this program is just beyond my limited mind to understand. I have purchased Corel Wordperfect 12 as a result.
Thanks
Randal

Re: Spell check.
A spellcheck in a Wordprocessor is such a basic and important tool that it should just work straight out of the box. For me and, I suspect, for the vast majority of users it does. I wonder what it is that a small minority of users do that is different to the rest of us?
Unfortunately, those users don't provide the information we need, so if there is a problem it cannot be fixed.
One thing to know about the Oo spellcheck is that it is designed for multilingual use. You can check text containing multiple languages, each section being checked by the appropriate dictionary. 90% of problems with spellcheck are caused by users checking text that has the wrong language set, or none. Some other problems are caused by an incorrect installation, a missing dictionary, etc. The other problems have an unknown cause — possibly user error caused by unchecking a box somewhere in Tools, Options that should be checked.
The conclusion that spellcheck does not work in this program is plainly wrong. Millions of users are happily spellchecking their documents on a daily basis, with or without autospellcheck underlining.
