Hi Guys,
I've been searching the data base but have been unable to find a solution to my problem.
I've got OOO 3.1.1, with Windows xp SP3. On my previous version of OpenOffice, I was able to insert a soft return into a cell. Since downloading v3.1.1, I have been unable to this. Has this function changed/moved?
Thanking you in advance
Vincent

Re: Soft Return in Calc won't work
Hi Vincent
What is a "soft return"?
If you just mean line breaks, try ctrl-return.
If you mean text wrapping, set it in format text alignment.
>oops< or is it exactly that what v. 3.1.1 does no more allow? (Have downloaded it but not yet managed to find the time for the installation - currently 3.10)

Re: Soft Return in Calc won't work
If I understand correctly, what you mean by "Soft Enter" is that a new line can be inserted into a cell, i.e. a cell can have contents of multiple lines.
I use OOo 3.1.1 on XP Pro En SP3, "Ctrl + Enter" can insert a new line in cell editing mode, no change on this from previous version.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. Yes it's a line break or soft enter. Soft return I think is a MS term. If there are no changes and it's working then I'll try reinstall the package.
Thanks
Vincent

Re: Soft Return in Calc won't work
FWIW, in my book a "soft return" is a newline inserted automatically by the software (sic!), normally as a word wrap to abide with text range borders.
A hard return is a newline inserted by user. In wordprocessors this is often assigned hotkey ctrl+enter. It's considered as a layout element, and not an element of punctuation.
A paragraph break is normally the consequence of pressing the enter key. Visually this is often identical to the hard return, but a paragraph is a punctuation element.

Before you reinstall the whole package you may try to reset your user profile (rename a certain folder and restart).Enzo_za wrote:Hi Guys,

Re: Soft Return in Calc won't work
It took a bit of time to find what I was looking for, but writing multi-line text in a cell works only if you work directly in the cell and not in the input line, which is what I was doing.
In the help menu of OpenOffice look for "Writing Multi-line Text " for further information.

To force text to wrap (or break) at a specific location within a cell:
1) Double-click at the location in the cell (and not at the input line at the top of the screen)
where you wish to insert a wrap (or break).
Note: A single-click on a cell produces a black border to identify the active cell,
whereas a double-click on a cell creates a blinking cursor within the cell.
2) If you need to reposition the cursor, you can use the arrow keys or a mouse click.
3) Press Ctrl-Enter to insert the wrap (or break).
4) Finish editing the cell by pressing Tab or Enter.
