OOo 2.0.4 is ancient in computer time ;-) It would be well worth the effort to upgrade to the current 2.3.1, if you can.

For images in tables, I think you will have less trouble if you select the image, right-click and choose Anchor > As character. You can still adjust the size of the image, or the vertical position relative to it's surrounding text, but otherwise it will stay put.

Great!

OOo, and Open Source software in general, does change rapidly. Most of it is immature and needs to change, and because it does not have the inertia of a traditional business, it can change in a more public and transparent way.

The OOo developers release updated versions about every six months. The releases (generally) alternate in purpose: one release to fix bugs, then a release to add new features. That means you can upgrade every six months if you want to use the new features, or once a year (with the debugging release) if you don't need the features and are more interested in stability and robustness.

Of course, if OOo is working well for what you're doing, you don't have to upgrade at all.

The next release, coming in March, is a new-features release. There is another big release--OOo 3.0--planned for September. That will also include new features, and will introduce some incompatibility with older versions and older files. I believe the plan is to maintain the 2.x line for a while, so no one will be forced to upgrade to OOo 3.
