Hello,
I want to use openOffice2 on linux Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal fossal) and I'can't load it because the application appears normally but when I click on one of the icons I have just enough of time to glance at the loading frame with the indian leather before it collapses.
From the terminal I get this message :

Code: Select all

I've seen some other messages on the forum, like this one https://forum-test.openoffice.org/en/fo ... 9b#p487763 and it looks like the loading of libgnomevfs2 2.24.4-6. is enough to make it work. That is not so easy to do for me ; even with that I'm not shure it's still true with the 20.04 version of Ubuntu.
Can you give me some help please ? Thank you in advance
Ben

OpenOffice runs for me on Xubuntu 20.04.2. Ignore the GailWindow message - it doesn't seem to cause any problems, and I am not certain anyone has yet found a cause/cure for it.

With regard to what gnome bits you need to load. here is a screenshot of all the libgnome bits I have loaded:
Libgnome.png
How many of these are _essential_ I cannot say.

Use the LibreOffice suite that is installed with your system. OpenOffice does not add any value to a Linux desktop.
Install OpenOffice as a second or third office if you want to compare.

Try to start OpenOffice like this:

Code: Select all

$ SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen /opt/libreoffice7.2/program/soffice

OpenOffice 2? Really? This is 15 years old.

Hi again,
I've found some other tracks because Linux open-error display a pannel at first to warn some developpers of open-office
So it looks like there is something to do with third-party-package ... unless it's just the name of a tag in the code

If you think that's helpfull to help me, let it me knows ...
Thanks again

OpenOffice is dead. Since many years nobody develops anything substancial for OpenOffice. LibreOffice is the new OpenOffice.

After some researches on different forums I have found a simple solution which is good enough to make it openoffice4 work as root from the terminal : the download of install-deb and langpack-deb must be done separetly, then extract in two different places to be shure the two DEBS repertories will be there to apply the three followings

Code: Select all

dpkg -i *.deb
, the second being on the desktop-integration repertory as explained in the documentation
Thanks to all of you :)

There is already a tutorial in the forum: [Tutorial] Installing Apache OpenOffice on GNU/Linux.

Running an application from root is a very bad idea. It means that there is still a problem with your installation.

I have read and followed carefully the page of your link, but it makes no change for me : there is still a problem of habilitation on the repertory /opt/openoffice4, even if I give all the rights to the user on this repository.
I have modified the bootstraprc file as indicated and that makes a small difference because the appplication doesn't crash anymore for the normal user but doesn't load much more too.
It's really linked to the contexts of distrvbution and version of applications, up to my mind
Thanks for your message anyway
