Note: I am able to open the same file in MS office with in a second.

In which format are these files saved? It is advisable to work always in .ods format, saving out to .xls format only when necessary.

If you're still running 3.2, can you upgrade to latest AOO 3.4?
What OS exactly BTW? You should add it to your forum signature.

The architectural constraints have been removed in recent versions of Calc, but the design problems have not been addressed. In my (few) tests, Calc is nearly unusable with large files. Even a simple table with 100k rows is terribly slow, especially with loading and saving, and the temporary files required are huge: a hundred-fold larger than the input file.

I'd expect that a 30Mb file is simply not going to work: there just isn't enough time, memory and disk space.

Try if Gnumeric will open the file.

Did you not read the posts above? The only fix I can think of is to reorganize things into smaller files until a "fix" is available. I'm not using OO.o right now but LibreOffice is no better.
