Problem inserting footers with offset

Hello-
I am trying to layout a book for print using OpenOffice Writer, following instructions in a series of articles on MakeTechEasier.com. They are written specifically for OO, but I'm having some issues. The article I'm referencing can be found here:

https://www.maketecheasier.com/layout-a ... rg-part-2/

Following the instructions given there, I'm trying to set a footer to put the page numbers in. You'll see in step 6 it says to insert a minus number in the offset field so that it won't add the footer to the pages that come before the first numbered page (title page, dedication, etc.).

The problem is, OO is putting a footer on those offset pages AND adding extra pages next to the title page, dedication page etc.) Mirrored pages is turned on, but it didn't add those extra pages until I added the footer. Anyone have an idea why it's adding those extra pages?

Thank you for any suggestions!

Could you upload a document showing the problem? If you do not want to upload your actual text, you can replace the text with dummy text. If you type dt and then press the F3 key, you will get a paragraph of text you can use as filler. The example should have just enough pages to show the problem.
To upload a document, click Post Reply and look for the Upload Attachment tab just below the box where you type a response.

The article is wrong. The "offset" can not change the actual page number and it can not remove footers.

"Offset" only displays the page number of a different page in the page number field. While it will change the number displayed on the page, if there is a TOC, the TOC would show the actual page number and not the number displayed on the page.

Footers are attributes of pages and are defined in the page style that is applied to the page. "Offset" would have to apply a different page style to a page in order to remove the footer from the page. It does not do that. The proper instructions for inserting and changing page numbers have been posted many times on this forum. Use the search terms "page" and "numbering" in the forum search box to find them.

A good topic here: [Tutorial] Page numbering.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the *EDIT button if your issue has been fixed.

I have had a quick look at the link you provided. I think I see what the auther may be doing and it makes me assume that he does not understand AOO. Certainly, his approach to numbering pages makes no sense at all in a well-formatted AOO document. It might work in MS Word.

If possible could you upload a sample file of the document? See How to attach a document

The forum has a maximum file size of 128k. If your example is larger you will need to upload to a file hosting site such as
Dropbox or MediaFire .and post the download link here.
