Russian forum

Postby a.harlamenkov » Sun Jun 24, 2018 7:48 pm

Dear colleagues! Hello.

Please consider the opening of the Russian Forum at https://forum.openoffice.org/ru/forum/ [fixed typo: was of "EN", fixed "RU"]

The reason for my appeal: in Russia the legislation in the field of IT is now actively changing, which makes it possible to expand the implementation of OpenOffice.org in state bodies and large corporations. In Russia, there are now separate groups of activists in various forums. When promoting OpenOffice, potential users (customers) first open the http://openoffice.org site on their own and do not see localized support there, which makes OOo very difficult to promote.

Advantages of opening a Russian forum:
- facilitating the promotion of OpenOffice in the local markets of Russian & ex-USSR;
- association of knowledge and experience of Russian-speaking users of Russian & ex-USSR;
- easy exchange of experience of the world community and local;
- a unified information policy;
- Reporting the ideas of the global project to local users.

====================
About me:
Participation in the project since 2008. For 6 years I administered the leading Russian national forum on OpenOffice.org (Global Moderator).
I signed an agreement with SUN about the transfer of rights and my name was in OpenOffice.org 2.x-3.x About - CTRL + SDT "Alexey Harlamenkov".
I created a wiki section: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/RU (more than 1000 pages).
My qualification: QA - Automated Testing, Manual Testing; Interoperability; User Support - forums, wiki, Tutorials, Training; Community Development; User; User Documentation - Author, Editor; Distribution; l10n (RU); Install.

Hi Aleksey and welcome to the forum!

Is there any link to the Russian national forum you participated in? Won't be able to assess it at all but it may give an idea of the activity.

Hi Hagar!

Unfortunately, since 2013 the server of the forum is unavailable.
There are only in the web.archive - https://web.archive.org/web/20130913072 ... -rs.ru:80/
The historical archive page is available: https://web.archive.org/web/20130913030 ... tion=stats
At that forum I acted under the nickname "Санчо" (Sancho), but in the signature I indicated my real name "Алексей Харламенков" (Aleksey Harlamenkov): https://web.archive.org/web/20131030132 ... 617.0.html

We have a link to an independent German NL forum on the forums home page, we could have one added for a Russian one if that's easier for the Russian user community.

Colleagues! thanks for the answers.

OpenOffice.org in Russia lost positions. This is an indisputable fact.
We need to recovery.
Recovery - through the consolidation of locals knowledge, specialists, users and the core of the Global Project.

In Russia there are forums about Openoffice not only at http://forumooo.ru, but also on other addresses and a lot of separate sections on a lot of different forums.
This is a problem.
All these forums are initiative of individuals not affiliated with the Project. Now all the Russian-language traffic is fragmented between many local resources. They actually compete with global resource http://openoffice.org.

If connect one of the third-party forums-it will take traffic from the Project. In this case, none of the advantages I have mentioned will be achieved, but Vice versa.

To run a forum successfully there needs to be a couple of dedicated moderators and helpers with a good understanding of "userland lingo", along with a working experience using some incarnation of the suite. Deep knowledge is useful, but perhaps not required initially if someone can relay unresolved issues to other forums (the English, French and German forums are good to use for that).

Russian forum would have a good potential user base. If the other sites also can be convinced to pool resources, that would be an excellent starting point. Keep a friendly atmosphere but strict policy against abuse, and the community will benefit from it. A beneficial community will thrive.

Apache representatives will have further communication around this before a new site branch is opened, I am sure. Good luck with your initiative!

But are there other moderators who would be willing to help?
A single one may be not enough. Perhaps another native language admin can confirm.

Yes there is.

There are two of my colleagues who were administrators and moderators together with me in the old forum (https://web.archive.org/web/20130913072 ... -rs.ru:80/).
They are ready to register on the new forum. This is Artem Eroshin and Nikolai Garbuz. This is a highly qualified team.

Hi Aleksey,

So if I recap, you would be 3 for moderation, correct?

I think that it would be easier to wait for the server upgrade before creating a new forum. But I don't know how much time it will take. Note that the forum needs to be created by the Project team. We don't have the karma for that.

No objection on my end.
You should ask the dev mailing list how to proceed. That would be nice if the other moderators could subscribe the dev mailing list and confirm that they are ready to get on board.

I would be the one who would be adding a Russian forum to the new VM and MySQL instance.

The upgrade to phpBB 3.2.4 is next on the list of activities. Perhaps I'll use the Russian forum as the first to be in 3.2.4.

I fully understand how Terry E created the multiple forums (it is not as crazily complicated as some think it just takes time following the links). I am confident that we can have different language versions on different phpBB versions but on a single PHP 5.6.

I don't want to guarantee when I can get to this, but I think it will be soon.

Great, thanks!

If there is any way to ease the administration of the forums, just feel free to propose. We are basically just volunteers for help in the forums. As long as each NL board works, we are fine with that.

They can sign up here and get used to the mechanics of this forum. But right now the forum is running on a Stone Age version of phpbb software, it's really better to wait for the upgrade to the most recent version so that yiu can get used to that instead of the old version.

Hi Rory, there was talk about that upgrade, but I never noticed tgat it was taken beyond the test version, and that seemed to have lots of problems. Then again, I've not been very act7ve here for quite a bit, so the update may have escaped my attention.
Edit: I checked, the Dutch forum still runs on 3.0.9 (published in 2011) and displays a warning that it's outdated.

There has been a system upgrade (hence the pretty good responsiveness of the forum) and the phpBB was part of the initial plan but there were issues with the language packs IIRC.
Once everybody is back from the holiday break, we should hear about the phpBB upgrade again I guess.
